I have joined up with two book clubs, one I was in since shortly after moving to Charleston through MUSC (suggested by Alix) and I have made some of the greatest friends ever has a result. The other, started through our Indian community, has been a blast and ditto on the greatest friends, also.
As a structured way to meet on a regular basis, we challenge our minds (well, we try any way), we laugh, have a good time and share a common interest: the love of reading! It has also been a great way for me to read more and read books that I may not normally choose on my own. But best of all, I look forward to seeing friends and the fun of it!
