Annakut

A special time for us is Annakut, when we celebrate the Gujarati New Year and Lord Krishna’s defeat of Indra, God of Rains. We commemorate the event, started 5,000 years ago, with mounds of food; and this year we were able to partake in it with the BAPS friends and members. Over 4,000 people attended the event, 800 parking spaces were accommodated for a facility that handles 200, over 800 different dishes were presented in the main temple, and the magnitude of pride in this day was seen in all. The day started at 4AM for me as I volunteered to make a couple dishes, but it was nice to feel part of it all in my own way. Ashna’s favorite part was the mounds of sweets they set aside for the kids and let them have of their chosen, a dream come true for some of our kids who are forced to subside their sweet tooth more often than they like. And a delight for me was the mandir’s of technology, they gave all participants a card with a bar code to scan with their smart phones to gain immediate access to photos being taken real-time at the temple—how cool is that!?!
